The coronavirus pandemic has impacted life in general and forced governments, businesses, and individuals to look at the way they have been used to doing thigs differently. Individuals, specifically, have been severely impacted in terms of lifestyle, form of working, and impact on career.

While these times are testing, they also present an opportunity to upskill oneself. Whether one is looking for additional income or a change in career, the new normal has given individuals the opportunity to do so which may not have been the case otherwise. And upskilling today does not require one to get out of the comfort of their homes.

One area which can function either as a second source of income or a second career is investing. In this article, we present 10 great courses to help one lay the groundwork for understanding investing. We have considered course on the basis of structure and fee.

While some would be free, we presented those paid ones which are not too heavy on the pocket. The courses also span from offerings on Indian platforms as well as global platforms.

The course ‘Come Let’s Invest – A Beginner’s Guide’ is a foundation level course in financial planning. It is available on elearnmarkets.com and is delivered by Tanuja Yadav. This course is focused on participants wanting to learn more about passive income and investing via passive vehicles like ETFs. The course is delivered by Wealthy Education and is available on udemy.com. There are 9 sections in the course and encompass 60 lectures.

The course has been rated 4.2 out of 5 stars by past participants. Though it costs Rs 12,800, making it quite expensive, at the time of writing, it was being offered at a 96% discount for the price of Rs 462.

4. Investing The Lazy Investor Way

This course aims to train participants in building their own portfolio as per their needs. It will help investors learn about investing in stocks, bonds, and ETFs, among other options. It also aims to help participants set up an automated system which does not require constant monitoring. The course has 5 hours of on demand video and provides full lifetime access. It also offers a certificate of completion. The course has been created by Steve Ballinger and is available on udemy.com.

The course has been rated 4.5 out of 5 stars by past participants. Though it costs Rs 12,800, making it quite expensive, at the time of writing, it was being offered at a 96% discount for the price of Rs 455.

5. A Beginners Guide to Investing in the Stock Market

The course aims to train participants in finding, analyzing, and valuing stocks. They want participants to be able to determine what to look for in a potential investment, when to buy, and when to sell. The course is meant for beginners so there are no pre-requisites. It offers 5 hours of on demand video, 5 downloadable resources, full lifetime access, and a certificate upon completion. The course has been created by Ton Vilord and is available on udemy.com.

6. Investing Basics for Millennials

The course defines millennials as those born after 1980. Though the course target such an audience, it is not restricted to them as anyone wanting to learn the basics of investing can benefit from it. The course aims to provide confidence to investors to start investing, specifically to those people who may be underinvested, scared to invest, or not sure what to invest in. There are only five lectures which combine for a total of only 16 minutes. There is no test and therefore no certification. The course is delivered by Lindsay Marsh and is offered by Skill Share.

There is no particular fee for this course, but one would need to be a premium member of the website to access the full course.

7. Stocks, Bonds, and Investing: Oh, My!

The course is meant for serious candidates who want to have a good theoretical grounding on investing. The course covers the fundamentals of investing as well as personal finance issues. It is offered by The University of Central Florida in partnership with Ed2Go. The course is delivered by Matt Crabtree, CFP.

The course can be taken in two ways: self-paced and instructor-led. The former would benefit people who can’t attend sessions at a particular time while the latter would be suited for people who can focus their attention on the course and need instructor support. Those who would prefer the instructor-led version need to enroll by fixed dates as available on the course website while those preferring the self-paced format can enroll anytime. The fee for either mode is $129.

8. Financial Markets

This is a beginner level course which aims to introduce participants to financial markets from the perspective of risk management and behavioral finance. It intends to help participants to understand the real-world functioning of securities, insurance, and banking industries. The course is an extensive one and interested candidates will need to invest a good amount of time for this course. It is spread over 7 weeks with videos spanning 26 hours. The course is delivered by Robert Shiller from Yale University and is available via the Coursera platform. It has been rated at 4.8 out of 5 by past participants.

Interested participants can enroll for free but certificates and access to all course materials would be available only to those who purchase it. Upon completion, participants can share the certificate with others to prove its authenticity.

9. Financial Markets and Investment Strategy Specialization

This course is meant for those who want to add to their knowledge about financial markets. It is a beginner level course but is an extensive one as it would take 6 months to complete if a candidate gives 3 hours per week. The topics covered in the course are: introduction to the basics of finance, how to evaluate risk and expected return, the behavioral aspect of investment strategy, and current trends. It is delivered by instructors from the Indian School of Business and is available on Coursera. It has been rated 4.5 out of 5 by past participants.

This specialization is part of a broader course but candidates can enroll only for this specialization as well.

10. Economics for Capital Markets

This course is meant for those people who have a basic idea of capital markets an investing but want to understand how economic principles impact markets. It gives a broad overview of monetary policy and economic indicators and aims to show how the markets should react to economic news vs. how they react in real life. Participants will get to know how they can use this information to trade. The course is offered by the Corporate Finance Institute and will take about 3 hours to complete.
